Happy New Year! I don’t think so.

Unless we’ve been in seclusion for a week, we probably heard “Happy New Year!” a hundred times. It’s what we say when the old calendars give way to the new. “Happy, Happy New Year!” Really?

At the stroke of midnight in Dubai, a world record for fireworks was set. Can anyone say “Millions up in light and smoke”? At 8:00 a.m. in the U.S. state of Colorado, eager customers stepped up to make their marijuana purchases. Pot stores are now open for business. They are buying cannabis as if it were candy. Projected annual sales are over $500 million. More millions up in light and smoke.

This morning during the traditional New Year’s Day Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California (U.S.A.), another first took place. As the floral covered float passed in front of TV cameras, a gay couple repeated their vows to a robed clergyman. They were pronounced “Married”. (What else could they call it?) Happy New Year!

Hats and whistles add to the celebration. It’s a new year. We ought to mourn these new steps of descent, deeper and deeper into decadence. America long ago crossed the line by declaring open rebellion against the Lord God Almighty.

News outlets spin that the nation’s economic forecast is bright. A freshly inaugurated mayor of a mega-city announced with enthusiasm. “A new day has dawned!” A new day indeed. We have never seen anything like it.

At a time like this, no one wants to hear from God’s prophet: “Woe, woe to those who call evil good and good evil. They do not fear the Lord! They are like cattle, fit only to be slaughtered. God roars like a lion, hungry for his prey. Woe to those who laugh now, for they shall weep and wail. Blessed are those who mourn now, for they will laugh.”

For the righteous who long for the Kingdom of God, 2014 won’t be a happy new year. More weeping. More sorrow. But take heart, saints, on that first morning with King Jesus our tears will turn into laughter. Our Happy New Year and New Day is not yet.
