Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing upon us great disaster. (Daniel 9:11b-12a NIV)
This series was taken from the essay “What Gives America?” by Benaiah Fredericks our newest contributor.)
Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before, and God will call the past to account. (Ecclesiastes 3:15).
We looked last time at America’s recent decline as a great empire. Following Britain’s downward spiral, the U.S. is forgetting their spiritual roots, and headed for disaster. These cousin nations have disobeyed God and have broken vows made by their fathers, Israel’s elders (Exodus 19:8, Joshua 24:21). Therefore, they will bring on themselves all the curses written in the Law (Deuteronomy 28 & 29).
In Part 1, the connection was made with Ephraim (aka Israel), the people taken into captivity by the Assyrians. Heirs of Abraham’s and Joseph’s blessing, they were scattered about the earth and assimilated among the nations. This was all according to God’s warning.
Ephraim’s seed was manifested in America’s founding. An example is John Winthrop’s sermon made aboard the Arbella before the colonists landed on the continent. The then-future Massachusetts Bay Colony governor stated, in part:
“Thus stands the cause between God and us. We are entered into covenant with Him for this work… Now if the Lord shall be pleased to hear us and bring us in peace to the place we desire, then hath He ratified this covenant and sealed our commission, [and] will expect a strict performance of the articles contained in it.” Lack of performance of the articles in this view would bring down the wrath of God. (The Encyclopedia Britannica, Vol. 26, p. 217)
The Lord obviously heard. To this day, Americans still reap the blessings of Governor Winthrop’s oath on behalf of his Puritan brethren and the Mayflower Compact. Today, in Britain and U.S. cities, lawlessness stalks the streets and corruption sits in high places.
God loves America. He planted it, nurtured it and established it as a light to the world. But that does not mean he will overlook sin and rebellion. It may seem so for a time, but it is only His patience at work. The calm before the storm should lead us to repentance, both corporate and individual. God’s hedge is being removed. Soon the curse will be in full effect lest America turn back to their Savior. He is just. As Daniel stated, God must judge sinful acts. Concerning God’s people, Israel, the prophet confessed,
The LORD did not hesitate to bring the disaster upon us, for the LORD our God is righteous in everything he does, yet we have not obeyed him. (Daniel 9:14)
We who live in America and Great Britain and have long enjoyed the benefits, but our sin has piled up to heaven. The stench has reached God’s nostrils. Come out from among the defilers, and be separate. Salvation for the righteous is of the Lord (Psalm 37:39). When Christ returns, they will be purified from their sin and redeemed from all nations. God said he would not abandon Ephraim. He could not give up the son He delivered out of Egypt (Hosea 11:1-3, 8). The Lord disciplines those He loves and will not forsake His faithful ones.
What a glorious destiny for Joseph’s heirs, the sons and daughters of Ephraim and Manasseh! Will you be there when God fulfills the promise He made through Jacob?
May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day, the Angel who has delivered me from all harm–may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly upon the earth. (Genesis 48:15-16)
