The Spanish-American, known popularly as George Santayana (1863 – 1952), was a philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist. He is widely known for articulating The Law of Repetitive Consequences.  In essence, this law states: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

As a tribute to the 150th year of the Madrid-born Santayana, let’s examine briefly the Spanish fleet, the “Armada Invencible” (literally “Great and Most Fortunate Navy” or “Invincible Fleet”)  and look at its 525 year-old lessons.  The Spanish ruler, King Philip II, had a long-standing personal feud with his relative, by marriage, Queen Elizabeth I of England. It came to a head when Philip sent his 130 ship armada (“the invincible fleet”) with the intention of overthrowing the Protestant queen and permanently establishing Spain’s power in the Low Countries or the Spanish Netherlands.

However, in August of 1588, Spain’s plan of conquest was not going well. They were beat back in a series of harassment-type attacks by the English fleet and forced to return to Spain. On the way back God intervened in the affairs of men. The Armada sailed into a great storm at sea, off the western coast of the northern part of Ireland. God inflicted heavy losses on the Armada. The Great and Most Fortunate Navy would never recover. Fifty of Spain’s ships that set sail with glorious intent, never returned home.

The British House of Commons may be paying attention to history. They denied their prime minister, David Cameron, the support he requested to help launch a strike against Syria’s leadership. As U.S. ships steam toward the eastern Mediterranean Sea armed with military muscle and might, except for France’s war machine that has known two centuries of defeat, they are sailing without allies. As our commander-in-chief, President Barrack Obama, sits poised to push the attack button without congressional or popular support at home, his attitude evokes images of the 16th century Philip II of Spain.

Back in America, many are still outraged by Miley Cyrus’ MTV awards performance, the justice department’s refusal to contest recently passed marijuana laws in Colorado and Washington, same-sex unions making their way through state legislatures, etc.  Could it be that the history lesson offered by Pharaoh’s commanders in Exodus 14:25 will be repeated? It was in their effort to destroy the Israelites that things started going badly. Just before they all died, they declared, “The Lord is fighting for them [the Israelites] against Egypt.” Do not be surprised if we see our God intervening again.

Question 6- You previously wrote The People of God. What kind of response did you receive from it?

Answer 6- I decided that The People of God is a gem with a richness that few have yet to appreciate—but many will. At this time, I have not had the response I thought it would have. A vital part of book sales is marketing. Marketing my own writing is difficult for me. A customer who judges the book by me or by its cover may be reluctant to take it seriously. If that obstacle is overcome, the next one is reading for comprehension what I wrote to grasp the message that is there. The principle that was quoted by Jesus applies, “There is no honor for prophets in their hometown.” My focus is on writing and publishing my next book or other written materials while I have the opportunity.

Question 11: The world, our country, and our leaders seem to be falling apart around us. At times, it appears the tribulation period is just around the corner. What are your thoughts on that?

Answer 11: My view on that is based on reading the Bible and studying history. The world is falling apart because we are fast approaching the time of the end and, yes, it is just around the corner. The world is also falling apart because Christians have lost their saltiness or influence with respect to culture, politics, morality, community, respect for life, and all the rest. We have the leadership we deserve. Chaos is on the way.

Tribulation happens in the natural course of things when we act like the Church is supposed to act. Trials come when we invade Satan’s territory and set his prisoners free. Tribulation is a good sign that we are doing something of relevance to God and to the devil. If we are persecuted, it means we are on the attack. Read Jesus, Peter and Paul on this subject.

The Church in Laodicea did not suffer the same tribulation as Smyrna and Philadelphia. Why not? Because they were self-centered, self-satisfied, prosperous and compromising, that’s why. Jesus expressed how worthless they were by saying he was about to spit them out of his mouth.

In general, Laodicea then is how we in America and other Western nations are today. We have largely given the world a false Jesus. The Jesus we have marketed wants us all to be healthy, wealthy, sitting in church on Sunday and passive. We will soon see the real Jesus in all his glory. Judgment will begin on the household of God, and for those who profess the name of Christ, it won’t be pretty. That is coming before the Tribulation, by the way.  Expect this soon!

Question 10: Is knowing the tribulation is coming enough? What must Christians do to prepare for these difficult times?

Answer 10: Knowing is not enough. It is only half the battle, but an important step nevertheless. We have to clear our head of false ideas or we will be unprepared for the distress Jesus says the elect will endure prior to his coming. We must study and teach prophecy. That was Paul’s encouragement to the church in Corinth.  The prophets have the revelation we need. Gather with others who dig into prophecy using the rules I referred to earlier. Develop Christian communities that are self-sufficient. Do all the things Jesus says or we won’t pass our future test. Nothing can be done for those in denial. They will likely fall away because they put their trust in a lie.

No one can afford to ignore prophecy. Heads must come out of the sand. This is all about salvation. Our Savior wants us to be saved to the uttermost. He wants our bodies and souls to be saved from what will soon come upon the whole earth. His Son Jesus is coming as the deliverer of his people. He is coming to establish his reign and rule over the earth and those he saves from out of the time of great distress will make up his kingdom and his priests. That is the future salvation that is written into Scripture in Revelation. Christ will demonstrate his glory and God will reveal his Sovereignty. He will punish those who alter prophecy for that reason. For those alive today, there is nothing more important than to know the truth. Why are we confused or in the dark about it? I suggest there is a diabolical answer to that question.
